In this course, we will investigate the development of evolutionary thought, paying special attention to Darwin’s theory of evolution by natural selection. We will consider not only
the scientific, but also the philosophical, social, political, economic, and religious sources of Darwin’s ideas. We will also consider the influence of his ideas on all those areas (and literature/fiction as well). The Darwinian revolution was an historical development of wide- ranging significance. The course is designed for students in both the humanities and sciences. There are no prerequisites.
