We offer an MA in STS and a PhD in English, History, Sociology or Philosophy with a STS research specialization. UBC is one of only two institutions in Canada to offer graduate degrees in STS, and is a node in the nation-wide SSHRC-funded “Situating Science” network.
At UBC, STS students can choose from a variety of courses that explore and analyze the conceptual foundations, practices, institutions, and representations of science and technology. Faculty from English, History, Philosophy, Geography, Sociology, the School of Journalism, and the Faculty of Education are affiliated with the Graduate Program. Recent faculty publications include books on climate change, technologies of affect, and Max Weber. Our biweekly STS Colloquium features local scholars as well as prominent visitors from around the world: Stephen Shapin in 2012, Bruno Latour in 2013, Isabelle Stengers and Lorraine Daston in 2014-15, and many more.
UBC is an outstanding educational and research institution, located in one of the world’s great cosmopolitan cities, Vancouver, British Columbia. We enjoy a vibrant arts and cultural scene, in a beautiful ocean and mountain setting, with a temperate climate.
Students who wish to pursue the MA should apply directly to the STS Program. Students who seek the PhD specialization should apply to one of the three departments listed.
