Dennis Danielson of the UBC Department of English delivers an STS colloquium talk titled “Milton and Galileo (or how one literature guy entered a cosmological orbit)” on Thursday, January 10, 5:00-6:30pm in Buchanan Tower 1197.
Abstract: In 1637 or 1638, on his way through Florence, the young Milton visited the elderly Galileo—and subsequently held him up as a symbol of intellectual freedom. In Paradise Lost, Galileo is the sole contemporary of Milton’s referred to by name. My discussion of the achievements of these two giants will suggest why we should read poetic and scientific writings together, and firsthand.
