On Thursday, November 13 from 5:00-6:30 pm in the Green College Coach House, Professor Lochlann Jain of the Department of Anthropology at Stanford University, will give a Science & Society Series talk.
Jain’s talk is titled “Commodity Violence: Thinking Through Injury and Illness in the Age of Consumption.”
Abstract
This paper will begin to think through the commodity as not only an enabling, but as a violent
form. In my previous work, Injury (Princeton University Press, 2006) and Malignant (University of California Press, 2013), I have examined in detail the ways in which Americans’ understandings of injurious relationships to the material world have been funneled and framed, problematically, through the law. In this talk, I will begin to work toward a theorization of how we can account both for the pleasures and the injuries of commodities by taking into particular account the history and politics of the automobile.
