Professor Susan Mattern of the University of Georgia Department of History delivers an STS colloquium talk titled “Galen’s Anxious Patients: Lupe as Anxiety Disorder” on Thursday, February 6th from 5:00-6:30 pm in the Green College Coach House.
This talk combines modern approaches in cross-cultural psychology with an analysis of the concept Galen calls “lupe,” to argue that Galen describes a syndrome similar to modern anxiety or distress syndromes (once called “culture-bound syndromes,” these are now more often interpreted as culture-specific manifestations of anxiety disorders).
