PHIL 560 002: Philosophy of Science

This core course in the philosophy of science is meant to be an introduction to some of the major concepts and debates in contemporary philosophy of science. The first part of the course will be concerned with the nature of evidence and scientific knowledge. Our topics in this part of the course will include objectivity in science, theory change, and the confirmation of scientific theories. The second part of the course will focus on the themes of explanation, causation and mechanisms. We will conclude with discussions of experimentation and scientific realism.
